ARTIST STATEMENT + CV

My goal has been to capture light, sound energy and movement in infinite space, an entity that I choose to refer to as ‘the 4th dimension’. I am interested in depicting energy through the movement of light. I wish to capture the feeling of infinite space, harnessing the sensation of voids inherent to matter, that is, particles of light. The emptiness, stillness and vastness of these voids can be overwhelming and yet, all-consuming: an unnerving stillness, yet one which is ‘deafening’ due to the sheer gravity of space.

The catalyst for this two-year long project was witnessing a flicker of light which appeared to be floating on the water at night at Marina Bay Sounds in Singapore in 2015. It was both seductive and evocative to me as an artist: I suddenly realised an innate desire to endeavour to replicate this visual and emotional experience.

I then realised that the only way that I was going to depict movement in my work was to free myself from the confines and restrictions of depicting ‘recognisable’ or ‘descriptive’ form. I have been trying to create movement in my work ever since art school, after seeing a drawing by the artist Paul Klee, which depicted a line drawn across a white page with a caption underneath - ‘taking a line for a walk’. I felt there was a connection between what Klee was wrestling with and my own artistic endeavours.

From that point, I wanted to ’take a line for a walk’ however, I wanted to make it dance
